Nowadays, OEMs mainly build highly specialized (expensive European-style enduros) or very affordable (Honda CRF250L, etc.) two-sport motorcycles. But a few years ago, when motorcycle sales were booming and emissions regulations weren`t as restrictive, the focus was more on do-it-all machines, motorcycles that worked decently well off-road but weren`t quite terrible on the road either. The Thumper 650 class are good examples, but there was also a strong 350-400 class, often with a road-legal version of the bike, and a stripped-down version that was just an off-road version. According to the announcement, this 2002 model is “plated and legal”. This is a heavily modified 2003 California plated Honda XR400R. I built this bike to be a double sport of indestructible lightweight performance that makes no compromises. The already reliable XR engine, fuel system and brakes are bony. But just about everything else has been updated. The standard suspension is just enough off-road, so I replaced the front fork springs with progressive rate coils and a race-tech valving. Followed by a custom rear spring and rear-ventilated rear shock absorber. With the standard suspension, driving in a rock garden on the west coast was stressful and tiring.

But with the improved suspension, Scott steering damper and SRC fork spacer, this XR now feels like a smooth and effortless ride, it simply absorbs the roughest terrain. Very accurate. It goes where you point it without shaking your limbs in the jelly. The sleek A-loop seat and fuel tank conversion allow you to move your body weight further forward in corners, which greatly improves control and stability, like a motocross bike. To recover the lost fuel capacity from the production tank, I added an Acerbis auxiliary fuel tank just behind the headlight cover, which redistributed the weight to the front to improve steering control. This bike comes with 2 sets of wheels: one set carries Avon Distanzias for the road, the other set has Dunlop Sports D739 for the land. To be a real double sport, I wanted to have the opportunity to drive through the city, on the highway or in the dirt. With a 15-tooth front sprocket and a 45-tooth rear, the standard final transmission is 3:1 and works well on trails, but it`s not gear-oriented on the highway (in fact, it`s a bit dangerous to drive an XR400 with a standard transmission on the highway). For my dual use, I adjusted the length of the chain to accommodate 2 sets of gears; I went with a 43-speed rear sprocket both on the road and on dirt wheels with a 15-tooth front sprocket for the road that gives you a 2,866:1 gearbox that allows for an easy and safe cruising speed of 70 mph on the highway or high-speed driving in the desert.

For trail rides, I replace the dirt wheels with a 13-tooth front sprocket, which gives it a 3.3:1 axle drive transmission and turns the XR400 into an absolute tractor! I decided not to drive double sport tyres because I thought they were too much of a compromise for me, especially in clay. But if, as a buyer, you prefer to drive dual sports tires that allow you to drive the highway to your favorite trails, you`ll bring the small 13-tooth front sprocket and an Allen key in your pocket and simply swap the 15-tooth for the 13-tooth front sprocket on the trailhead, which only takes a few minutes. then come back for the return home.
